Can you connect to an outside (someone else's) wireless connection?

I don't have a wireless router. However, I was testing a Cisco Aironet 350 Series before sending it to someone. When I plugged it into my laptop it said I had "low connectivity" on "Scotts network". I have no idea who Scott is! Is this dangerous and should I be concerned?????
