French work ethic?

Ok dont answer about if you don't like the French. Whatever, I dont care. Anyways I've interviewed at a French American School and it went great. They said I may not hear until the first week of August because they have a lot of people to interview. Well, I know in American standards, its great to be early and its great to almost pester the future employer to make a good impression. Well, its been a week and a half and I havent heard anything yet. I still have time but I am SO eager. The people who run the school are French and I'm wondering, can I call and "check in?" Or by their standards would they be annoyed? If you've ever worked in France or with people from there, please help me. Thanks so much!
