What would cause a removed piercing to become infected?

3 years ago I took out my belly on piercing. Haven't had a problem with it since then until yesterday. It is inflamed, sore, and bright red. Not to mention the drainage i'm having which is weird. There's the pus that i'm expecting but then if i squeeze it this white stuff that smells funny comes out...WTF is going on?
